Lead scraper

Find local businesses by type and place, see how well they market themselves online, and save the best ones as contacts you can email.

Find it in: Lead Generation → Search Leads 20 steps

The lead scraper finds businesses from public map data — for example dentists within 10 km of Austin — and then looks at each business's own website. It collects the phone number, website, published email address and social profiles, detects the website platform and advertising tags, and gives every business a score so you can see who is most worth contacting.

You choose which businesses to keep. Saved leads can go straight into a list as contacts, ready for a campaign.

What you can do with Lead scraper

Find businesses anywhere

Search by business type and location, with a radius, country and postal code.

Check their websites

Each website is analysed for emails, phone numbers, social profiles, platform and SEO.

Scores that point to opportunity

A Business Score, an SEO Score and a lead quality label show who needs your help most.

Spot advertisers

See which businesses have Google Ads or social ad tags on their site.

Turn leads into contacts

Save chosen leads to a new or existing list, with tags for segments.

Export

Download your saved leads as CSV, XLSX or JSON.

Re-run searches

Every search is kept in history, and you can save the ones you repeat.

Optional data providers

Connect Google Places, HERE or TomTom with your own key for more contact details.

Open the scraper and choose a data source

The lead scraper can search a free map database, or a paid business directory using your own key. You pick once and can change it at any time.

  1. Open Search Leads

In the left sidebar, under Lead Generation, click Search Leads.

The Business Lead Scraper page opens with the Find businesses form. The buttons at the top right take you to Saved Searches, Saved Leads and API Settings.

  2. Choose free mode or an API

The first time you open the scraper, it asks How do you want to find leads? After that, the Data source bar above the search form shows the source in use, which API keys are connected, and what a search costs: API requests on your own provider account, Google profile lookups made with your Google Places key (you can switch these off there), and your lead credits (each saved lead uses one). Click the source name to switch to another source. The ⋮ button beside it turns the Google profile lookup on or off and opens API Settings.

    1. Free — no API key searches OpenStreetMap. It has no API cost. Click Start free.
    2. Connect an API — better lead quality searches Google Places, HERE or TomTom with a key you get yourself. Far more of these listings have a phone number or website. Click Set up a provider to add a key (see Connect an API provider).

Read the results

  1. Scan the results table

Each row is one business. The coloured stripe on the left shows its lead quality: High Potential, Good Potential, Average or Low Information.

    • Contact — icons for phone, email and website.
    • Website — the platform the site is built on, such as WordPress or Shopify.
    • Social — the social profiles linked from the site.
    • Google — Google rating, when a Google Places key is connected.
    • Ads — Google Ads and social ad tags found on the site.
    • SEO and Score — the SEO Score and the Business Score, out of 100.
    • Mkt Spend — an estimated marketing spend range.
  2. Search, filter and sort the results

Use the controls above the table:

    1. Search leads... — find a business by name.
    2. Lead quality tabs — All leads, High Potential, Good Potential, Average and Low Information. Each tab shows how many leads it holds; pick one to show only that level.
    3. Sort — for example Business score, Weakest SEO first or Highest marketing spend.
    4. Quick filters — Has email, Has phone, Runs ads, Has Google profile and Not saved. Reset filters clears everything at once.
    5. Columns — hide the columns you don't need. Your choice is remembered in this browser.
  3. Open a lead for the full picture

Click a row to open its details. You see the Business Score, SEO Score and Social Score, the contact details, SEO Issues, Advertising Signals and Why this lead? — the gaps you could help with.

The Proposal brief sums the business up in a few lines. Click Copy brief to paste it into an email or a proposal.

About the scores. The Business Score measures the opportunity for you, not how good the business is. Weak SEO or no newsletter signup raises the score, because that is work you can offer. A score marked provisional is based on fewer signals, for example before the website has been analysed.

Save leads and add them to a list

Nothing is stored in your account until you save it. Saving is also the point where leads count against your plan.

  1. Select the leads you want

    1. Tick the box at the start of each row you want to keep, or tick the box in the header to select every row.
    2. A bar appears at the bottom of the screen. Click Save Selected.

The same bar has Re-analyze, to check the selected websites again, and Clear, to undo the selection.

To keep a single lead, click Save at the end of its row: it goes straight to Saved Leads. The arrow beside Save opens the panel below for that one lead, so you can pick a list and tags.

  2. Choose a list and tags, then save

The Save leads to Mailkoo panel first shows how many leads are New, already saved, or possible duplicates.

    1. Add to list — pick an existing list, Create a new list (then type a New list name), or None to keep them in Saved Leads only.
    2. Tags — comma separated, for example dentist, austin. They are added to every contact, so you can build segments from them.
    3. Under When a lead already exists, choose Skip duplicates, Update existing or Create new anyway, then click Save Selected.

Leads without an email address cannot become contacts. The panel tells you how many there are, and they stay in Saved Leads.

New contacts get the business name, phone, website, city, country, category, Business Score and SEO Score as list fields, plus automatic tags such as source:scraper and the category and location.

Work with saved leads

  1. Open Saved Leads

Click Saved Leads in the sidebar. Every business you have kept is listed with its scores and contact icons. The Saved column shows the list a lead was added to.

Use the filter bar to search by name, or filter by category, lead quality and whether the lead has an email.

  2. Review a saved lead

Click a business name to open the same detail panel you saw in the search results, including the Proposal brief and Advertising Signals.

  3. Export your leads

    1. Set the filters so the list shows the leads you want, for example one category.
    2. Click Export and choose CSV, XLSX or JSON.

The file contains the leads that match your current filters, not only the ones on screen.

Save and repeat searches

  1. Save a search you will run again

Fill in the search form, then:

    1. Click Save this search.
    2. Type a name, or keep the one suggested, and click Save.

The search appears under Saved Searches.

  2. Look back at past searches

Click Search History in the sidebar. Each search shows its source, date, status and how many leads you Saved from it.

Open the ⋮ menu on a row:

    • View — the saved leads from that search.
    • Repeat Search — runs the same search again.
    • Delete — removes it from history. The leads you saved are kept.
  3. Run a saved search

Click Saved Searches in the sidebar, open the ⋮ menu on a row and click Run Search Again. The form is filled in and the search starts.

If the saved search used a different data source from the one you use now, the form is filled in but not started, so you can decide first.

Connect an API provider

This is optional. Connect a provider when you want more listings with phone numbers and websites, or Google ratings and reviews. You use your own key, and the provider bills you directly.

  1. Open API Settings

Click API Settings in the sidebar. Each provider has its own card:

    • Google Places — returns ratings and review counts, but needs a billing account on your Google Cloud project.
    • HERE and TomTom — no billing account needed to start, but no ratings or reviews.
  2. Add your key

    1. Click Get a key to open the provider's site and create a key.
    2. Paste it into API key.
    3. Click Save key.

Saving a key does not switch you over. Click Use this provider on the card, or choose Choose a provider on the How do you want to find leads? page.

  3. Follow the Google Places setup guide

On the Google Places card, click Setup guide. It walks you through Google Cloud Console step by step: pick a project, enable billing, enable Places API (New), create and restrict the key, and set a spending cap.

With a Google Places key saved, Google ratings and reviews are also looked up for your OpenStreetMap results after each search.

Common questions

My search stopped with "None of the free OpenStreetMap servers responded". What now?

Free mode uses public, volunteer-run servers that are sometimes busy or down. Nothing is wrong with your search. Wait a few minutes and try again, or connect an API provider for a source with an uptime guarantee. If you see a rate-limit message instead, use a smaller radius or fewer results.

Why do some businesses have no email address?

An email is only recorded when the business publishes it on its website. Nothing is guessed or generated, so you never mail an address that does not exist. Leads without an email stay in Saved Leads but cannot be added to a list.

Does searching use up my plan?

No. Only saving leads counts against the lead allowance in your plan. If you run out, you can still open and export the leads you already saved.

Does "Detected" under Google Ads mean the business is advertising right now?

Not necessarily. It means an ad platform's tag is on their website, so they set it up at some point. No known signal means we looked and found none, which does not prove they never advertise. Unknown means the site could not be checked.

Why are the rating and review filters greyed out?

OpenStreetMap does not publish ratings or reviews. Those filters work when you search with Google Places.

Can I add saved leads to a list later?

Leads are added to a list when you save them from the search results. For leads already in Saved Leads, click Export, then import the file into a list.
