Email campaigns

Send a one-off email to your lists, test it first, and see exactly who opened, clicked and replied.

Find it in: Campaigns → Campaign 31 steps

A campaign is a single email you send to one or more lists at a time you choose, such as a newsletter, a promotion or an announcement. A short five-step wizard takes you from choosing recipients to launching, and every sent campaign gets its own report.

For emails that go out automatically when someone joins a list or takes an action, use Automation instead.

Find your way around the campaign list

The campaign list shows every campaign you have created, newest first, with its delivery and engagement numbers.

  1. Open the campaign list

Click Campaign under Campaigns in the left sidebar (1). Each row shows the campaign name, the list it went to, its status and the Delivered, Open rate, Click rate and Response rate columns.

Click Create campaign (2) to start a new one.

  2. Search, sort and filter

Use the bar above the table to find a campaign quickly:

    1. Search campaigns... matches campaign names as you type.
    2. Sort by date or Sort by name.
    3. The arrow button switches between newest-first and oldest-first.
    4. All statuses shows only campaigns with one status, for example Sent, Scheduled or Draft.
  3. Use the actions on a row

Click View to open a sent campaign's report, or Edit on a campaign that has not been sent yet. Click the arrow next to it for more:

    • View report
    • Replicate makes a copy you can edit and send again.
    • Resend sends it again to a chosen group of subscribers.
    • Send test email
    • Pause or Resume, when the campaign is scheduled or sending.
    • Archive and Delete.
  4. Act on several campaigns at once

Tick the boxes on the left of the rows you want. An Actions button appears with the number selected. Choose Resume, Pause or Delete to apply it to all of them.

Create and send a campaign

The wizard has five steps: Recipients, Setup, Template, Schedule and Confirm. Your work is saved at each step, so you can leave and come back later. The steps are shown at the top of every page; click a finished step to go back to it.

  1. Choose the type of campaign

Click Create campaign on the campaign list. Pick one type and click its Create button:

    1. Regular Campaign: a designed HTML email built from a template. Best for newsletters and promotions.
    2. Plain Text: a simple text-only message that feels personal.
    3. A/B Test: send different versions and let the best one win. See Run an A/B test below.
  2. Step 1: choose your recipients

    1. Under Mailing list, pick the list to send to.
    2. Under Segment (optional), narrow the list to a segment. Leave it on All subscribers to send to the whole list.
    3. Click Add another list to include more lists. Use the Default option to choose which list fills in tags such as {{ LIST_NAME }}.

    Click Save & Continue.

  3. Step 2: name the campaign and set the sender

    Under Basic information, fill in:

    • Campaign name: for you only; subscribers never see it.
    • Email subject: the subject line in the inbox. Type {{ to insert a merge tag such as the subscriber's first name.
    • From name and From email: who the email comes from.
    • Reply-to email: where replies go.
  4. Get AI help with the subject line

Click the sparkle icon at the end of the Email subject field to open AI rewrite. Pick a quick action such as Improve, Shorten, Simplify, Fix grammar, CTA-ify, Translate or Match brand voice, set the Tone and Length if you like, then click Rewrite. You can check the result before it replaces your text.

  5. Choose tracking and delivery options

    Under Advanced Settings:

    • Track opens and Track clicks turn on the open and click numbers in your report.
    • Reply tracking shows whether replies are counted. It needs a connected reply mailbox.
    • Enable DKIM signing signs each email so inboxes trust it. Leave it on.
    • Skip failed messages keeps sending when one address fails.
    • Tracking domain lets you use your own domain in tracked links.

Below this card, Sending servers and Webhooks are for advanced setups. Most people can leave them as they are. Click Save & Continue.

  6. Step 3: choose a template

On the Template gallery tab, browse the designs. Filter with All, Base or Extended, and switch between System templates (1), the ready-made designs, and My templates (2), the ones you saved yourself. Point at a design and click Choose (3).

Once a design is chosen, click Open email builder to change the text, images and colours. Click Change template to start again with another design.

  7. Or paste your own HTML

If your email was designed in another tool, open the Your Custom HTML tab. Paste your code with Edit Source (1), or type in the editor, then click Save HTML. Merge tags such as {{ SUBSCRIBER_FIRST_NAME }} and {{ UNSUBSCRIBE_URL }} still work.

For a Plain Text campaign, this step shows a simple text box instead.

  8. Design the email in the builder

The email builder opens full screen. Drag blocks from the Widgets panel (1) into the email, click any block to change it, and use the device buttons (2) to check how it looks on desktop, tablet and mobile. Click Save (3) when you are done.

The Templates guide explains the builder in detail.

  9. Step 4: choose when to send

Pick Send now (1) to start sending as soon as you launch, or Schedule for later (2) and set the Date and Time. Times are in your own timezone, which is shown under the fields. Click Save & Continue.

  10. Step 5: check and launch

The Pre-flight checklist checks your recipients, subject line, sender, email template, delivery schedule and tracking. Items marked Needs attention must be fixed before you can launch; click Edit to jump to the right step.

Click Send test email (1) to see the email in your own inbox, or Preview to see it on screen. When everything is ready, click Launch Campaign (2).

  11. Send a test email

Enter the address under Send to email address and click Send test. The test uses your real template and merge tags, so you can check links, images and personalisation in a real inbox. You can also send a test from the campaign list with Send test email in the row menu.

Run an A/B test

An A/B test sends two or more versions (variants) of an email to part of your list, measures which one performs best, then sends the winner to everyone else. Each variant can have its own subject line and design.

  1. Start an A/B test

Click Create campaign, then click Create next to A/B Test. The A/B Test Setup page has three steps: Campaign, Variants and Winner Rules.

  2. Set up the test

Under Campaign basics, enter the Campaign name, pick the Audience list, and set the Test audience size: the share of the list that receives the test. Under Assignment strategy, keep Exact split unless your list has more than 100,000 subscribers; Hash split is faster but only approximate.

  3. Add your variants

Click Add variant for each version. For each one, set the Variant name, Email subject, sender details and Split %, then click Choose template and Edit design. The splits must add up to exactly 100%.

To get ideas fast, use Generate variants with AI: enter a base subject line and what you are testing, and the AI drafts subject-line variants you can edit before adding them.

  4. Choose how the winner is picked

Under Winner selection, choose Highest open rate, Highest click rate, Highest response rate or Manual selection. Under Wait before deciding, set how many hours to collect results before the winner is chosen.

On Review & Launch, check the Launch checklist, pick Send now or Schedule for later, and click Launch A/B Test.

  5. Follow the results

Open the campaign to see the A/B Test Report: a comparison of the variants, their open, click and reply rates, and a Statistical confidence panel that tells you whether the difference is real. With Manual selection, click Choose as winner on the variant you want to send to the rest of your list.

Read the campaign report

Click a sent campaign in the list, or View on its row, to open its report.

  1. Open the report

The top of the report shows the subject line, sender, list and send time, plus a short summary of how the campaign did. The tabs (1) take you to Overview, Insights, Conversions, Links, Map, Sending logs and Email review (a preview of the email).

Use Preview as to see the email exactly as one particular subscriber received it.

  2. See what happened to your email

What happened to this campaign follows your audience from Recipients to Delivered, Opened, Clicked and Replied, and shows how many people dropped off between each stage.

If you have chosen conversion tags on your dashboard, a last green stage, Converted, shows how many recipients now carry one of them. It has no drop-off figure, because someone can convert without clicking or replying. Without conversion tags, a line under the chart links to the dashboard to set them up.

The row underneath lists everyone who Left the funnel: Failed, Bounced, Unsubscribed, Reported as spam and abuse reports. Click View as table for the same numbers as a table.

  3. Check activity over time

Performance over time charts opens, clicks and replies hour by hour. Change the period with the menu on the right. Most opens usually happen in the first day or two.

  4. See each subscriber in Insights

The Insights tab shows how many emails were Delivered, Failed, Pending or Skipped, and lists every recipient with their last open, last click and status. Filter the list with All opens, All clicks, All replies and All status, or search by email address.

  5. See who converted

The Conversions tab lists the recipients of this campaign who carry one of your conversion tags, with the tag that made them count. Click an email address to open the person's profile, or search by email address.

Conversion tags are chosen once for your whole account, on the dashboard's Converted card. See Measure real results with tags.

  6. Find your most-clicked links

The Links tab lists every tracked link with its number of clicks and share of all clicks, plus charts of the click distribution. Click View click log to see who clicked what.

  7. See where people opened

Open Map and choose Open map or Click map to see the countries and cities your subscribers opened or clicked from. Click a pin for details.

  8. Look up the detailed logs

Open Sending logs for a record of every event: Delivery log, Bounce log, Feedback log (spam complaints), Open log, Click log, Unsubscribe log and Reply log.

Use the bounce log to spot bad addresses and keep your list clean.

Copy, resend, pause or delete a campaign

  1. Copy a campaign

Click the arrow on a campaign's row and choose Replicate. Enter a Campaign name for the copy and click Copy campaign. The copy keeps the template, subject, sender, tracking settings and recipient list, and is saved as a new draft you can edit before sending.

  2. Resend to the people you missed

Choose Resend in the row menu of a sent campaign. Pick who should get it again:

    • Did not receive the email: new subscribers, or those whose delivery failed.
    • Did not open the email: try it with a different subject line.
    • Did not click on any link in the email
    • Did not reply to the email
    • Clean up and force resend to all

    Click Resend.

  3. Pause, resume, archive or delete

From the row menu (or the Actions button for several campaigns):

    • Pause stops a scheduled or sending campaign. Resume starts it again from where it stopped.
    • Archive stores the detailed sending records of an old campaign in a compact form to keep your account fast.
    • Delete removes the campaign and its report.

Common questions

Can I edit a campaign after I launch it?

You can open the wizard steps of a campaign that is sending and save changes, but they only affect emails that have not been queued yet. There is no guarantee every remaining email will get the change, so check everything with Send test email before you launch.

Why does my launch checklist say "Needs attention"?

Something required is missing: usually no template, no subject line, no sender details or no subscribers in the chosen list or segment. Click Edit next to the item to fix it.

Why are my open numbers lower than expected?

Opens are measured with a tiny image. Some email apps block images or load them in advance, so open counts are an estimate. Clicks and replies are more reliable signs of interest.

Does a subscriber on two lists get the email twice?

No. When you send to several lists, each email address receives the campaign once.

What is the difference between Replicate and Resend?

Replicate creates a new, separate campaign you can change before sending. Resend sends the same campaign again to a chosen group, such as people who did not open it, and adds the results to the same report.
